How to calculate sales tax

Sales tax = Price × Rate ÷ 100, and Total = Price × (1 + Rate ÷ 100). Example: $100 at 7.25% → $7.25 tax, $107.25 total.

Reverse sales tax

To find the price before tax from a receipt total, divide by (1 + Rate ÷ 100). Example: $107.25 ÷ 1.0725 = $100.00, so the tax was $7.25.

State sales tax rates

Base statewide rates (local taxes not included). Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Rates change — confirm with your state’s department of revenue for filings.
